A mouse nested in an air conditioner and fried the capacitor. The homeowner called at 8am on a June 2025 morning with 90-degree days coming; Dan, the owner, was at the house shortly after nine and had it diagnosed and fixed. Customers here keep describing the same thing — somebody answers, and somebody comes. Max Heating and Cooling works out of Saugus across the towns north of Boston: Melrose, Wakefield, Lynnfield, Arlington, Lexington, Danvers, Everett, Lynn, Malden, Medford, Peabody, Reading and Revere. It is an HVAC company that also takes on plumbing and electrical work, with ductless and high-velocity systems, sheet metal fabrication and commercial refrigeration on the list. The site says the company has been building its reputation since 2019 and that its staff have more than 20 years between them. The big jobs are conversions. A July 2025 customer in a house over a hundred years old had the heating changed from oil to gas and central air added, with the electrical upgrades done by the same team. In March 2025 a furnace blew on a Monday afternoon and was replaced by Thursday night, with central air and a new gas connection — and temporary heat for the nights in between. An April 2024 customer had a 1970s gas boiler pulled out and two heat pumps installed. A December 2022 customer had mini splits downstairs, ducted heating and cooling upstairs, and the old gas furnace and radiators taken away. A lot of these customers arrived after being turned away elsewhere. In June 2024 a homeowner whose heat pump had failed said a large Boston company's technician would not even look at the unit before saying a whole new system was needed. In February 2024 a family met seven companies after a leak in their air handler mixed chemicals and left their seven-year-old sick for months. A May 2024 customer had been through several companies that could not identify the fault before Joseph named it on arrival. Not everything lands. A June 2026 customer said the central air system Max installed has had multiple problems, that questions and repair requests are not being answered, and that the company was not knowledgeable about the specs of the equipment it had recommended. Separately, a commenter in a June 2025 r/boston thread said no Manual J load calculation was done and the crew was quick in and out. For a summer breakdown or an oil-to-gas conversion, this is a small outfit where the owner still picks up the phone and turns up at the house. Before an installation, ask for the load calculation in writing — the sizing math behind whatever equipment they propose — and get the warranty and callback terms on paper, since that is where the one recent unhappy customer ended up.
