Hiring Movers in Western Massachusetts: DPU Authority, College-Calendar Crunches and Hill-Town Driveways

The short answer

A local move in Western Massachusetts typically costs about $830 to $1,550. A company moving household goods within Massachusetts needs operating authority from the Department of Public Utilities and a filed tariff; one crossing a state line, even to Connecticut, needs a USDOT number from FMCSA. College move-out in May and move-in in late August fill calendars fast.

In-state moves
DPU operating authority, a filed tariff and a decal on each truck for household-goods movers within Massachusetts
Interstate moves

Moving in Western Massachusetts has two rhythms. One is the ordinary flow of families buying and selling houses in Longmeadow, Westfield and Pittsfield. The other is the academic calendar: tens of thousands of students and staff moving in and out of Amherst, Northampton, South Hadley and Williamstown on almost the same days each year. Hiring the right mover means knowing which rules apply to your move, and booking around the crunch.

Amherst to Boston or Amherst to Hartford: which agency covers the move

The answer depends on whether your belongings cross a state line.

  • Within Massachusetts. A move from Amherst to Boston, or from Springfield to Pittsfield, is intrastate. Household-goods movers doing that work are regulated by the Department of Public Utilities' Transportation Oversight Division, which keeps a list of the moving companies it regulates, with rates where available.
  • Across a state line. A move from Longmeadow to Enfield, Connecticut, a few miles south, is interstate. Federal rules apply, and the mover needs a USDOT number registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. FMCSA's Protect Your Move FAQ explains how to check a mover by name or number and see its complaint history.

Because the Springfield area sits right on the Connecticut line, many "local" moves here are legally interstate. Ask the mover which authority covers your move, and make sure they hold it.

Looking up a mover's DPU authority and tariff

To move household goods within Massachusetts for hire, a company must first get operating authority from the DPU. The state's application page shows what that involves: proof of a registered business, a balance sheet, a certificate of insurance, a filed tariff (with a $100 fee per tariff), and a decal for each vehicle ($40 apiece). Applications are heard at a monthly public hearing.

For you, that means three things to check:

  1. The company is on the DPU's list, under the name on its truck and invoice.
  2. Its trucks carry the DPU decal.
  3. Its prices follow its filed tariff. The tariff sets how the company charges, and the DPU list shows rates where they have been posted.

A mover who cannot show DPU authority for an in-state move, or a USDOT number for an interstate one, is not one to trust with everything you own.

The college-calendar crunch: May move-out and late-August move-in

The Five Colleges (UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Smith, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire College) and Williams College set the busiest moving weeks in the region. Students and faculty leave in May and arrive in late August, and rental leases in Amherst, Hadley, Northampton and South Hadley often turn over on the same dates. Add the first and last day of any month, and those weeks book up early.

If you are moving in those windows:

  • Book well ahead and get the date in writing.
  • Ask about elevator reservations or parking permits for apartment buildings, since the crew may need a space by the door.
  • Expect less flexibility on arrival times.
  • Consider a midweek date in early June or mid-August if your lease allows.

If your move has nothing to do with the colleges, avoid those weeks altogether. Crews and trucks are cheaper and easier to get almost any other time.

Hill-town driveways, long carries and winter moves

A move to or from Heath, Rowe, Hawley, Windsor or Florida brings problems city movers rarely face. Long, steep or unpaved driveways may not take a full-size truck. A camp on a lake road may be reached by a narrow lane. In winter, ice and snow can stop a truck at the bottom of the hill.

Tell the mover about access when you ask for an estimate, and send photos. Ask:

  • Will a smaller shuttle truck be needed, and what does it cost?
  • How is a long carry from truck to door charged?
  • What is the plan if snow or ice makes the driveway unsafe on moving day?

A mover who has never been up your road may quote low and then charge for the shuttle on the day.

Third-floor walk-ups in Springfield, Holyoke and Chicopee

The three-deckers and brick blocks of the valley's mill cities hold a great many apartments reached by narrow front stairs, a back porch stair or both. Moving out of a third-floor unit in a canal-side Holyoke block or a Chicopee three-decker is slower and harder than moving out of a ranch, and movers price it that way.

When you ask for estimates, say which floor you are on, which stair the crew will use and whether there are tight turns. Measure the largest items and the narrowest point on the stairs. A sofa that came in before a railing was added may not go out the same way, and hoisting over a porch rail is a specialty job that not every crew does.

Parking is the other half. On a city street with no driveway, the truck may have to double-park or stop around the corner, which adds carrying distance and time. Ask whether your city requires a permit to reserve curb space for a moving truck, and who arranges it. If the crew has to walk half a block with every box, the hours add up quickly.

Estimates, the tariff and what a local move covers

The Western Massachusetts calculator puts a typical local move at about $830 to $1,550, and the moving cost estimate for this market lets you set the size of your home and the distance. Get estimates from more than one mover, ideally after a walk-through, in person or by video. Compare:

  • Hourly rate and crew size, or the flat price.
  • Travel time to and from your home, which many movers bill.
  • Packing, materials and disassembly.
  • Stairs, long carries and heavy items such as pianos or safes.
  • Valuation coverage: what the mover will pay if something is damaged, and what extra coverage costs.

Get the estimate, the date and the coverage in writing. On moving day, check the inventory before the truck leaves and before you sign at delivery. If something is damaged, note it on the paperwork and file the claim promptly.

Moving into or out of a Berkshire second home

Many Berkshire moves are not full moves: a family bringing furniture to a summer house in Lenox, or clearing out a second home in Great Barrington after a sale. These partial moves are often from out of state, which makes them interstate moves with a USDOT carrier. Ask whether the mover consolidates small shipments, and how long the furniture might sit in a warehouse before delivery. Get the delivery window in writing, and make sure someone will be at the house to receive it.

What does a move cost in Western Massachusetts?

Most moves in Western Massachusetts run $830 – $1,550. Adjust the estimate for your job in the mover cost guide.

Hiring movers in Western Massachusetts: your questions

Do movers in Massachusetts need a license?
Movers aren't licensed as building contractors. An interstate mover must hold a US DOT number (check it on fmcsa.dot.gov), and where Massachusetts regulates in-state household-goods movers the company should show its state carrier certificate on its truck or website.
How much do movers cost in Western Massachusetts?
The calculator default for a typical local move is about $830 to $1,550. A one-bedroom apartment in the same town sits low. A full house, a third-floor walk-up, a piano or a long carry from a hill-town driveway push the price higher.
How far ahead should I book?
For the end of May, late August or the first of any month, book several weeks ahead, longer in the college towns. Midweek, mid-month dates are easiest to get and sometimes cheaper.
Do movers pack for me?
Most offer packing for an added charge, by the hour or by the box. Ask whether packing materials are included, and who is responsible for damage in boxes you packed yourself.
Should I tip movers?
It is customary but not required. If the crew worked carefully and on time, a tip per person, or lunch and drinks on a long day, is common. It should never be a condition written into the bill.
